Passionate software engineering manager with a wealth of experience designing and delivering innovative solutions.

Marc Seinfeld is a security innovator, and creative technologist with a career spanning more than two decades at Microsoft.

He played a pivotal role leading teams and driving their formative work in global corporate email systems, mobile connectivity and core antivirus protection technology, resulting in 25 Ship-It Awards and ample global Patent filings. These in turn have been cited thousands of times in subsequent domain related filings (additional SCISPACE citations reference).

In addition to his own inventions, he chaired his organization’s patent committee, driving the filing of several times more patents for his teams and shaping a deep, strategically valuable IP portfolio—one designed both to create hard‑to‑replicate offensive positions and to provide meaningful defensive leverage in cross‑licensing negotiations. During this period, as Microsoft’s legal organization expanded significantly in the post‑antitrust era, he played a behind‑the‑scenes role in reshaping how attorneys and engineering teams worked together—helping shift legal’s posture from one of constraint to one of strategic enablement. This alignment transformed two initially misaligned groups into a synergistic force that protected innovation, amplified long‑term product value, and freed engineers to focus on creative, high‑impact work. He also served on company‑wide patent‑pool acquisition diligence teams.

His two day deposition on several specific patents granted to him by the USPTO was followed, within a quarter, by the settlement of a longstanding patent dispute between Microsoft and Alcatel Lucent — a case that had previously produced a $1.5B judgment against Microsoft. The final outcome, reached in 2008, was an undisclosed settlement representing only a single digit percentage of that earlier amount; while specifics are confidential, the resolution preserved value for Microsoft that exceeded his decades of salary by several orders of magnitude.

He founded the Microsoft Mobile Information Server (aka MMIS, codename: AirStream) effort, ultimately producing the Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) v1.0 protocol and IP licensing that became a major commercial and strategic win for Microsoft. What is now routine—email, calendar, and contacts anywhere, anyplace, anytime—was then the pioneering breakthrough that bridged data-bound feature phones over fragile, limited bandwidth, latency-ridden networks into the modern smartphone age.

The core AV team he founded, along with the security technology they pursued, continues to provide a foundational role securing hundreds of millions of (recent tallies acrrue ~1.4B) Windows workstations. Further, backend integration extends the protective impact to countless additional users across Microsoft's major global cloud services, including Outlook.com, OneDrive, and Azure.

Today, Marc serves as the Director of Business Operations and Shop Foreman for KirPaint, Inc.

He holds a B.A. in Economics from Duke University, where he also rowed bow seat for their lightweight 8 crew. He's an avid diver having logged over 300 dives, or more than 9 days bottom time beneath seawater. In the time honored tradition of shade tree mechanic, he can often be found tinkering on his daily driver, or in recent months pulling a shot of espresso.
